Colin Firth shrank his ELLEN underwear to put on his Oscar and went to surprise Ellen with it.
HE’S PROBABLY THE ONLY PERSON THAT COULD EVER SURPRISE ELLEN DEGENERES.
“This is one of the most important scenes in the film because it really sets up our understanding of George’s grief. This is one of the only references to the discrimination that same sex couples had in this period of time and the way Colin just snaps his eyes closed, grits his teeth, and then opens his eyes again, I think really says so much. Colin’s face is so expressive and I warned him that I was just gonna hold the camera on him throughout this sequence and we shot 3000 feet, I let three mags run out, because just when I was about to say cut his face would change and the crew was riveted. And I think you know whenever you have a crew that cannot take their eyes off of the performer that you need to leave the camera running.”
Tom Ford, in the commentary track for A Single Man
To this day, this remains my favorite performance by Colin Firth and quite possibly one of the most expressive and heart-breaking moments I’ve witnessed in film. There is nothing he could have done to better express him characters emotions during this scene, and I think it’s absolutely glorious and one of the best moments in the movie.

I’m afraid I have to warn you that I’m experiencing stirrings somewhere in the upper abdominals, which are threating to form themselves into dance moves - which, as joyous as they may be for me, would be extremely problematic if they make it to my legs before I get off stage.

Who needs to breathe when you have Colin Firth, a bathtub, bubbles, and a bottle of red?
Rub a dub dub, Colin Firth in a tub!

I think it’s quite extraordinary that people cast me as if I’m Warren Beatty: until I met my present wife, at the age of 35, you could name two girlfriends.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but I was a mess. It was Dumbo. Dumbo. No, I mean a baby elephant’s mum gets locked up in prison, I mean how, who’s not going to cry come on. I remember when I first saw that in the cinema. As I remember them, there was three skinheads with tears pouring down their faces. So they weren’t just English they were skinheads and they were weeping at Dumbo.
